Restaurant Recommendations

One of the initial goals of this blog was to help us remember our time here. Where we ate, where we stayed when we traveled, fun things we did in the city. It's turned into more 'what we've learned' and 'what is different' than the original goal. Yesterday as I was walking to class, I decided I should remedy that. We surprisingly have a nice handful of Ecuadorian readers, besides ourselves, and so this post (and the next couple posts) are for you!

Fancy Restaurants -
For that night when you just need to get dressed up and be served a strong cocktail properly made by someone who actually cares about service. These are for you.

Zazu - Peruvian, especially seafood
address: Mariano Aguilera y La Pradera (in between the Mariscal and the Guayasamin tunnel)
telephone: [593 2] 254 3559 You usually need a reservation.
What to order? The ceviche mixto, the seafood cones, the lobster bisque and the tartar. Seriously out-of-this-world! Also order a bottle of champagne to accompany the pana cota for dessert!

San Telmo - Argentinean steak house
address: Portugal, between Elloy Alfaro y 6 de Deciembre, on the north side of the street
You never need a reservation.
What to order? The shrimp plate that comes out on hot stones, and beef. That's all you need.

Chipote Chillon - Mexican food
address: The corner of Elloy Alfaro Luis Armendariz
It's a good idea to make a reservation. You can make one on their facebook page, under the same name.
This place isn't as fancy as Zazu and San Telmo, but you won't be out of place if you look nice.
What to order? Anything that includes cheese, because this is the only restaurant in Quito that has decent cheese!

NOE - Sushi
address: Isabela la Catohlica y Coruna
telephone: ?? But you should make a reservation.
What to order? This is a good place to go with a group. Order the sampler platter for 5 to 6 people. It has one of the best sushi rolls I've ever had on it. It's fried. Don't ask about the healthfulness, just eat it.

Normal, I don't want to cook dinner tonight, Restaurants -
For when you don't want to cook dinner... or do dishes.

La Guardia de la Coyote - Mexican food
address: Portugal, in between Elloy Alfaro y 6 de Deciembre
What to order? A burrito, the manuel if you're really hungry. ITS HUGE! Also, the lemonada frappe is delicious!

Al Forno - Pizza
address: there are a bunch of them. The one we go to is Belgica y Shyris
telephone: 3330681, yes they deliver!
What to order? We've had about 1/2 of their pizza menu, which is extensive and everything is really good. If you're a veggie the asparagus pizza is delicious. If you're not, all of the types of meat are good. Make sure to ask for extra hot oil if you're having it delivered. At the restaurant it comes in a jug and you can use as much as you'd like!

Mi Cocina - Ecuadorian Food
address: by Megamaxi on 6 de Deciembre
What to order? The HUGE empanada verde and the rice dishes are great too! Everything is good and tasty and authentic.

Ceviches de Ruminauhi - Seafood
address: they're all over the place. But the ones we frequent are in QuiCentro and in Old Town.
What to order? Any ceviche you'd like because you're not going to get sick! I really like the rice with seafood dish!

Super, Super Cheap Food
Food that is cheaper to buy than to make

Santa Clara Market -
address: Colon y Versailles
SOOOO good and SOOO cheap. Don't worry, we've never gotten sick from eating there. But seriously go with the hornado or the fish. Plus get a juice. You won't be disappointed!

Well, here are some of our favorites. I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting. Do you have any to add?
